SESSION 18 Foot Musculature
2
Objectives To deduce muscle actions, discuss stability vs mobility, and discuss structure and function relationship of the foot. The foot is one of the most essential structures to the PT since adjusting gait/running forces (and correcting higher joints) can be done sometimes simply with shoes or inserts.
3
Pin the muscle on the foot layer! With your 3 person group, create these structures on the following slide: AbH; FDB; AbDM Med Plant N & A; Lat Plant N & A QP FHL; FDL Lumb FHB; AdH; FDM Sesamoid bones

Layer 4 Dorsal Interossei Plantar Interossei Arcuate Artery Deep Plantar Arch
6
Stability vs. Mobility Increase stability Increase Mobility Strong, tight ligamentsLots of joints Low ROM for each jointLow amount of fat Bones fit together tightlyTibiotalar joint & MTP joints Lots of muscles & tendons
7
Structure & Function Positives Protective of neurovasculature Effective force transference Effective for gait Negatives Lots of dysfunctions!
8
Common Problems Talotarsal dislocation – talus rotates medially, foot rotates laterally
9
Common Problems Hammertoe Hallux Valgus (Bunions) Pes Planus (Flatfeet) Plantar Fasciitis
10
Common Problems Tibial Nerve Entrapment Medial Plantar Nerve Entrapment (Jogger’s foot)

12
Your patient stepped on a nail that went between the 1 st and 2 nd metatarsals. What functions will be most affected? (ignoring the affect of pain) A. Flexion of the big MTP joint B. Flexion of the 2 nd MTP joint C. All movements of the 2 nd MTP joint
13
Which common problem is this? A. Hallux Valgus B. Hammertoe C. Jogger’s Foot D. Pes Planus
