What is Stress?? The body and minds reaction to every day demands or threats What types of things cause teen stress???

Two Types of Stress Distress (negative stress) Caused by too much pressure/trauma and you don’t know how to cope with it Caused by too much pressure/trauma and you don’t know how to cope with it (ex.) too much homework, catching a bus when you are late (ex.) too much homework, catching a bus when you are late Eustress (positive stress) Can help to achieve your goals (ex.) if you are concerned about your final grade and you study harder

Alarm Stage Body’s Reaction: The hypothalamus (nerve center base of the brain) is excited-activates the pituitary gland The hypothalamus (nerve center base of the brain) is excited-activates the pituitary gland Pituitary gland releases a hormone called adrenaline (emergency hormone to prepare the body to respond to stress) Pituitary gland releases a hormone called adrenaline (emergency hormone to prepare the body to respond to stress) What happens??? Resistance Stage The body tries to repair its damage from the stressful event and return to normal Returns to homeostasis (the body’s natural balanced state)

Exhaustion Stage Occurs when distress lasts for long periods of time and may lead to illness Ex. Death Divorce/break-up Divorce/break-up Serious family problems Serious family problems
