QUESTIONS to be ANSWERED What is stress? What causes stress? How does stress affect your health? What can be done to reduce stress?

WHAT IS STRESS? Stress - is any emotional, physical, social, economic, or other factor that requires a response or change. Stressor - anything that wears and tears on the body’s physical or mental resources. Distress – a negative stress state, state of danger or trouble.

TYPES OF STRESS Acute – Short term stress (fight or flight). Stress that comes on suddenly. Examples: loud noises, crowds, insect stings. Episodic – Intense stress that occurs during certain periods in life. Lasts longer than acute stress. Examples: college exams, peer pressure, parental pressure. Chronic – On going stressful situations that are stressful but not deadly. Lasts for days, weeks or longer. This type of stress causes most physical and emotional problems. Examples: school, illness, relationships.

POSITIVE STRESS SITUATIONS Eustress - Stress that is healthy or gives a feeling of fulfillment. Meeting a challenge. –Example: Michael Phelps winning his seventh gold medal in the 2008 summer Olympics.

THE FIGHT OR FLIGHT RESPONSE TO STRESS Flight or Fight Reaction- by either fleeing from a situation of remaining and attempting to deal with it. Reactions includes – Increased cardiac output Pupil dilation Increased heart rate Increased alertness

COPING MECHANISM Coping Mechanism – Any effort directed towards stress management. –Can be positive or negative. POSITIVE EXAMPLES: Working out, sleep, humor, talking to a friend. NEGATIVE EXAMPLES: Alcohol, drugs – temporarily relieve stress, but result in greater problems.

EXTERNAL DEMANDS Family Example: “My Mom and Dad fight a lot.” Social Example: “My friends are all mad at me.” Environmental Example: Why does it have to snow today? Financial Example: “How am I going to pay these bills?” Work/ School Example: “I have 7 projects due this week!”

INTERNAL DEMANDS Responsibility Example: Remembering to walk the family dog. Obligations Example: Attending Grandma’s 90 th birthday. Self-criticism Example: “I cant stand the way my hair looks today.”

SIGNS OF STRESS Feeling edgy, guilty, angry or depressed. Laughing or crying for no apparent reason. Negative outlook on life. Headaches, stomach aches, or any physical pain. Trouble concentrating or remembering.

THE DONTS OF REDUCING STRESS Drink Caffeine- too much can cause nervousness and anxiety. Drink Alcohol- affects good judgment, causes hangovers. Use Nicotine- Raises heart rate and stresses out the body. Eat Sugar- Raises heart rate. Be Lazy- lead to frustration and boredom.
