Objectives Participants will: Learn why it is important to be aware of their bodies. Identify ways that will help keep them healthy. Know who to talk to when they are not feeling well. Recognize the difference between emotional and physical ailments.

Why Is It Important to Talk About Our Bodies? So we can stay healthy So we can be good to our bodies To stay out of the hospital So we don’t get sick Stay away from more harm Because you deserve to feel good!

How Do We Stay Healthy? Stay away from people who are sick Drink a lot of water Wash our hands often Eat foods that are good for us Exercise (walking) Visit our doctor(s) for yearly check-ups Tell someone when we are not feeling well

Sometimes we may feel differently… Mad (do you ever want to hit something?) Sad (do you ever feel like crying?) Upset about something that’s bothering us Moody, crabby Happy (feels like smiling) We don’t feel good about ourselves Maybe we don’t know how we feel

How do you know… When you feel sad? When you feel happy? When you feel mad? When you feel lonely? When you feel frustrated?

It’s ok to tell or show someone that you are not feeling well Staff, family, close friends, doctors, nurses, teachers Remember that people care about you and want to help You deserve to feel good about yourself You deserve to be happy You have the right to express yourself

What are some healthy things we can do to help us feel better? Ask to go for a walk Draw a picture of how we feel Write in a journal Take 3 very deep breaths Hang-out in our room Ask to talk to staff Talk about what is bothering us Keep busy Try to do some household chores May help relieve stress Listen to music

What are “Boundaries”? Our personal space The space that surrounds our bodies Different for everyone They are invisible When our boundaries are violated, we may feel uncomfortable

Sometimes… …things happen inside our bodies that makes us get sick or hurt. We might get sick (cold, flu) Maybe we have a toothache Or a headache Women may get menstrual cramps Sometimes our bodies or our muscles hurt

Examine Your Body Examine your body at least once a day Check your head, face, neck, shoulders back, chest, arms, elbows, fingers stomach penis or vagina, buttocks thighs, knees, calves, ankles feet, toes
