Bell Ringer (10/7) What are common harmful effects to the eyes/vision? How can you protect your eyes?

BELL RINGER (10/8) Hearing loss can be caused by exposure to loud noises. When listening to music can you tell if the volume is too loud/causing damage? Are there warning signs of hearing loss?

Bell Ringer (10/10) If you could give up one of your five senses for a super power, would you do it? What sense would you go without? What superpower would you have?

VISION (EYES) CORNEA: Clear outer covering IRIS: Color; muscles; regulates light RETINA: inner eye; receives images RODS: detects light CONES: detects color

EYE CARE Use water to flush eye, do not rub it! Eye Protection Avoid prolonged sun exposure. UV-B causes cataracts (clouding of lens)

HEARING (EARS) OUTER EAR: Auricle, auditory canal, tympanic membrane MIDDLE EAR: Malleus, incus, staples INNER EAR: oval window, cochlea, semicircular canals

Sound Vibration of material Frequency: pitch (hertz; Hz) Intensity: loudness (decibels; db)

Hearing Loss Damage to ears from extremely high intensity sounds or prolonged exposure to high intensity sounds. Cumulative effect: small damage may not be noticed; builds over time; irreversible. Prevention: Protection, avoidance

SMELL and TASTE Odors and tastes come from chemicals Olfactory Area: nasal area where odors are detected. Taste Buds: sweet, sour, bitter, salty Umani: “beefy”

SYNESTHESIA Joined sensation “Sixth sense” Stimulation of one sense creates simultaneous response in another sense.
