Imperialism occurs when a powerful nation controls a weaker country During the 1500’s, many European countries set up colonies in the Americas

Colonialism, or the controlling of colonies, is another name for imperialism The American Revolutionary War changed Europe’s opinion about colonialism –They thought it was more trouble than it was worth

Industrialism Helping Imperialism Industrial Revolution one reason why imperialism spread –To make money out of industry, factory owners must have raw materials and natural resources. Africa and Asia had these, so Europeans took control of these places –Colonies gave Europeans a ready market where they could sell their goods

By taking over colonies, they could control markets –Each major nation let its colonies buy only the goods manufactured in the mother country – the nation that controls a colony

Nationalism Helping Imperialism Imperialism spread because countries wanted to look important in the eyes of the world –Italy, Germany, Japan, and the United States thought colonies would make them as powerful as England and France –Believed, “There has never been a great power without great colonies.”

Militarism Helping Imperialism In the late 1800’s, many countries built up their military power –Sea power was important because it helped nations control trade routes

Attitudes Helping Imperialism People in Europe and U.S. thought Africans and Asians were ignorant and uncivilized –Believed they should bring Christianity and western civilization to these countries
