4 The major challenge today is striving to reach the highest standards of achievement in all our schools The need to operationalize the Treaty of Chaguaramas to establish common standards and mutual recognition of qualifications CSME: Need to address issues of harmonisation of standards; mutual recognition of qualifications; relevance of education and training 4

16 CARICOM The Task Force commissioned a comprehensive survey of teacher education with funding assistance from the CKLN The results of the survey presented a picture of widespread diversity and differences in policy, practices and approaches The differences underscored the need for established standards of teaching performance and for standardizing the various programmes that prepare teachers across the region. 16
