1 New England Colonies Massachusetts Connecticut Rhode Island New Hampshire

2 Massachusetts 1628 – small group of Puritan settlers arrived in North America with a charter from the King of England. 1630 – John Winthrop led a second group to the MA Bay Colony. “A City Upon a Hill” –example of good Christian living.

3 Rhode Island Roger Williams was expelled from Massachusette (1636). Anne Hutchinson was accused of sedition and also expelled (1637). The two joined together and signed a charter that formed Rhode Island in 1647.

4 New Hampshire Scottish Colonists moved north of Massachusetts to establish a fishing settlement. David Thomson joined with others in 1679 to form the colony of New Hampshire.

5 Connecticut Colonists left Massachusetts (poor, rocky soil) to find better farmland. Thomas Hooker was one Puritan who left and settled Hartford in 1636.

6 Life in New England The Religious Life of the Puritans Every part of life was living a “pure” way Very strict rules (no games or acting in plays) Punished for sleeping in church Punished for speaking out against the religion.

8 Home Life Families always had a fire burning in the main room for warmth, cooking, and washing. Evenings were spent reading the Bible in the main room.

9 Girls and Women Prepared food Creamed butter Dried and preserved fruit Made clothes and quilts Made soap, candles, and hair brushes Cared for children

10 Boys and Men Hunted for food, fur, and hides Cut firewood Made tools Patrolled the towns Cleared, plowed, planted crops

11 Autumn ~ Exchanges In the fall, ALL colonists harvested the crops together Harvested goods were sent to England in exchange for paper, lead and paint Harvested goods were sent to the Caribbean for sugar

12 New England Schools Children attended school to learn to read (Bible) New England had the most schools of all the other colonist groups One room, one teacher Used hornbooks for writing practice Boys continued education Puritans founded Harvard University to train ministers
