2. Massachusetts 1628 – small group of Puritan settlers arrived in North America with a charter from the King of England. 1630 – John Winthrop led a second group to the MA Bay Colony. “A City Upon a Hill” –example of good Christian living.

3. Rhode Island Roger Williams was expelled from Massachusette (1636). Anne Hutchinson was accused of sedition and also expelled (1637). The two joined together and signed a charter that formed Rhode Island in 1647.

4. New Hampshire Scottish Colonists moved north of Massachusetts to establish a fishing settlement. David Thomson joined with others in 1679 to form the colony of New Hampshire.

5. Connecticut Colonists left Massachusetts (poor, rocky soil) to find better farmland. Thomas Hooker was one Puritan who left and settled Hartford in 1636.
