2 BUCS Club Development aims Develop the organisation, governance structures and skills of student sports clubs. Help to support improvement and increased effectiveness of student sports clubs. Support HEIs to extend their provision to students through mutually beneficial partnerships between university and community clubs Consult with the sector and NGB’s to develop an appropriate accreditation tool for university sports clubs

4 Activity What club development training does your university currently provide? Who is responsible for delivering this training? Is there anything extra that you would like to offer to your students?

5 Running Sports – The Partnership Working together to develop appropriate resources for HE club development. Currently no formal accredited HE club development training that is endorsed by BUCS. Combining the club development expertise of Running Sport with BUCS relationship with higher education institutions. Acknowledgement that the structure of a student sports club differs from a community club.

6 Club Committee Training Already provided by many HEIs – as shown in the HE audit. The level varies across the HE sector. –Time available –Resource –No. of sports clubs –No. of student officers BUCS is looking to develop a standard club development package that can be utilised by its members as required. This offer will as flexible as possible to meet the requirements of each individual HEI.

7 Current Situation Running Sports have tailored their current club development package to the specific structure of HE sports clubs. Workshop content built upon existing knowledge of Running Sports in community club and volunteer development.Workshop content built upon existing knowledge of Running Sports in community club and volunteer development. The workshops cover 3 areas of club development:The workshops cover 3 areas of club development: – Governance and Administration – Finance and Funding – Action Planning

8 The Workshops 3 x 2 hour long workshops. Delivered to current or incoming student club officers Students that attend the workshops will receive recognised certification. –Running Sports and BUCS Each workshop will have HEI co-delivery – information on the specific processes at that university.

9 1) The Club Committee An introduction to student sports committees. Responsibilities of a student led club committee. The role of the chairperson. The role of the secretary. The role of the treasurer. The importance of student sport at the institution. Provide a focus for the year in post.

10 2) Marketing and Promoting your Club The value of promotion and marketing. Develop an understanding of promotion and marketing methods. How to target promotion to the relevant audience at the university and the wider community. Creating a marketing action plan. Evaluating sports club promotion and marketing.

11 Principles of Sport Development Sport Development Pathways Principles of Planning Sport development plans How to write a successful sport development plan. Identifying appropriate partnerships at the university and in the wider community. 3) Planning your Club’s Future

12 Pilot Programme Workshops to be held at 5 north-west HEIs throughout May and June. Delivered by qualified Running Sports tutors in conjunction with individual HEI staff. Feedback will be delivered to BUCS members at the BUCS conference. Future Developments –Creation of a club development package for the HE sector. –Development of a cost effective tutor training package for BUCS members. to include CTS qualification. different levels of product orientation. –BUCS will research funding opportunities for future HE club development training.
