2 The Era of Good Feelings  Peace for the U.S. after the War of 1812  JAMES MONROE Two time Republican President Manages to reach trade and fishing agreement with England. Also sets the northern border between the U.S. and Canada

3 The Issue of Florida  Americans want to settle there, but it isn’t ours.  We also deal with the Seminole Indians attacking our people.  ANDREW JACKSON Sent with an army to deal with them Fights the Spanish and takes over Florida without orders from the President  ADAMS-ONIS TREATY We get Florida from Spain if we give up claims on Texas

4 The Monroe Doctrine  This was a warning to all foreign powers to not make new colonies in N./S. America or else we would see it as a hostile attack on the U.S.

6 Expansion and Improvements  1819- 11 Free States and 11 Slave States Missouri is next, what should it be?  MISSOURI COMPROMISE Missouri enters as a slave state Maine come in as a free state Slavery is prohibited in any new territories or states north of the 36 30’lat.

7 Internal Improvements  AMERICAN SYSTEM- Improve roads and canals to connect the country Make a PROTECTIVE TARIFF Tax on foreign imports, to get people to buy American goods.

8 Internal Improvements  CUMBERLAND ROAD – First road built by the federal gov’t Stretched east to Ohio  ERIE CANAL Canal built to transport goods from Lake Erie to New York

9 The Election of 1824  Election problems! Andrew Jackson wins the popular vote, while John Quincy Adams wins the electoral votes.  House of Reps. decides and gives the election to Adams Adams gets no support as President! VS.

11 Age of Jackson  Andrew Jackson = Fresh and Alive Leader  John Quincy Adams= Cold Leader

12 Jacksonian Democracy  Voting rules are relaxes and more men begin to vote  NOMINATING CONVENTIONS: Public meetings to select a party’s candidate for president and vice president.  DEMOCRATIC PARTY Common people in favor of Jackson unite

13 Jackson’s Victory  Party at the White House and everyone is invited  SPOILS SYSTEM Jackson gives his friends jobs when he is elected

14 Tariff Problems  The south is losing money They had trouble trading with foreign countries due to the tariffs  STATE’S RIGHTS Belief that each state had the right to cancel any federal law seen as unconstitutional  South Carolina fights the tariffs because they are “unconstitutional”!

15 Martin Van Buren  A Democrat who wants to take over for Jackson  WHIG PARTY Against Jackson Wants a weak president and a strong legislature  Van Buren wins

16 Martin Van Buren  PANIC OF 1837 A huge national financial crisis Van Buren is blamed  WILIAM HENRY HARRISON 1 st Whig president takes over

18 The Black Hawk War  The Black Hawks are forced out of Illinois by the U.S.  INDIAN REMOVAL ACTS OF 1830  Remove all Indians living east of the Mississippi River  Send them to Oklahoma-Indian Land  BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS Oversaw federal policy toward the Indians Many Indians die because of a lack of food and supplies

19 Trail of Tears  Gold is found on Cherokee land in Georgia They’re kicked out  Supreme Court ruled the removal illegal President Jackson said, “The Justice made the ruling, let him enforce it!” Jackson did nothing  The Cherokee are moved west-4,000 die.

20 2 nd Seminole War  The Seminoles resist removal and fight the U.S.  The U.S. gives up after losing 1,500 men  Seminoles still live in Florida today.
