History Standard SS8H7 The student will evaluate key political, social, and economic changes that occurred in Georgia between 1877 and 1918. a.Evaluate the impact the Bourbon Triumvirate, Henry Grady, International Cotton Exposition, Tom Watson and the Populists, Rebecca Latimer Felton, the 1906 Atlanta Riot, the Leo Frank Case, and the county unit system had on Georgia during this period. b.Analyze how rights were denied to African-Americans through Jim Crow laws, Plessy v. Ferguson, disenfranchisement, and racial violence. c.Explain the roles of Booker T. Washington, W. E. B. DuBois, John and Lugenia Burns Hope, and Alonzo Herndon. d.Give reasons for World War I and describe Georgia's contributions.

Causes for WWI (1914-1917) Nationalism – Extreme devotion to ones’ country Alliances & Imperialism – Nations formed alliances “in case” war broke out – Countries were fighting mainly over Africa and the resources available there Increased Militarism – Many of the countries were building up their militaries (particularly in Germany & Russia) Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary sparked the beginning of the war – By a Serbian Nationalist Austria-Hungary was urged to declare war on Serbia by its ally Germany Russia was an ally of Serbia and joined the war when Serbia did Other nations will follow, but the US does not enter until 1917

Georgia’s Contributions to WWI More than 100,000 Georgians contributed to the war-effort Georgia provided cotton and other materials for the war Agricultural impact – Canning techniques developed and new industry came to Georgia – Meat packing process and production also provided new economic opportunities By the end of the war, GA was home to more training camps than any other state – One camp housed German POWs – Military Hospital at Fort MacPherson

US Enters WWI The US had adopted a policy of isolationism – We should not become involved in European relations Two major factors contributing to US involvement – The sinking of the Lusitania – The interception of the Zimmerman Telegram President Wilson asked Congress to declare war on German and its allies – Congress approves April 6, 1917 War ends Nov. 11, 1918 (Armistice Day) with the signing of the Treaty of Versailles – Germany surrenders and is forced to pay for the damages caused by the war This will eventually lead to WWII
