UNIT 8 SEMINAR Science and Culture: An Uneasy Partnership

Joint Appeal by Religion and Science for the Environment “DECLARATION OF THE ‘MISSION TO WASHINGTON’” Washington, DC, 1992

Science and Culture: An Uneasy Partnership Science and religion meet in a time of environmental crisis. Humans seek to protect life and the natural world. Humans are poisoning the air, land, and water. The destruction of forests, grasslands, and other ecosystems continue.

Science and Culture: An Uneasy Partnership Consequences: compromised immune systems, more infectious disease, higher cancer rates, disruption of the food chain/web, UV light damage, destruction of plants and animals, and displaced species. The human population increases 250,000 per day. Nations must join together to resolve this crisis.

Science and Culture: An Uneasy Partnership The U.S. is the leading polluter. We generate more greenhouse gases (including CO2) than any other country. It will take centuries to see the consequences of our actions. Morals, pride, arrogance, greed, and ignorance all play a role.

Science and Culture: An Uneasy Partnership Wealthy nations have a moral obligation to assist impoverished nations. Toxic wastes are dumped more in low income areas. The world spends over one trillion dollars a year on warfare.

Science and Culture: An Uneasy Partnership Goals: efficient use of fossil fuels, renewable sources of energy, elimination of ozone-depleting chemicals. halting deforestation, restoring habitats, social justice, population control, and education. Signatories: priests, scientists, poets, professors, and administrators (government, universities, non-profit organizations, churches).

Science and Culture: An Uneasy Partnership 1. What common ground do religious groups and science share in this appeal?

Science and Culture: An Uneasy Partnership 1. What are the common interests of science and religion?

Science and Culture: An Uneasy Partnership 1. Many scientists are religious believers. How can these two ways of viewing the world work well together?

Bulldog and pug playing. Thanks for a great seminar! Please start your final project this week, which is due the end of Unit 9. Have a great rest of week and weekend!
