5 What do you know about Australia? Australia was discovered about 53, 000 years ago. It is possible that the first people crossed into Australia from Asia on great land bridge when the water above of the oceans was lower. In 1901, the Commonwealth of Australia was formed, with Canberra as its capital. English is its official language. Its flag shows the UK flag and a large star with seven points. Australia is famous for its animals such as kangaroos and koalas.
