2 Why become a Rules Interpreter? –Support NATRC and Ride Management by volunteering –Help provide consistency and fairness in judging and administration –Provide valuable feedback to management and National Board to improve NATRC –Get a complete view of a competition from start to finish with transportation provided –Have fun, eat for free and learn a lot! 3 Who is eligible to be a Rules Interpreter? –Any member in good standing –Must NOT be a family member of the ride chairman or the judges –Must be approved by NATRC in 6-week Progress Report –Must be thoroughly familiar with the NATRC rules –Must have a positive, friendly and cooperative attitude at all times, even when surrounded by controversy Reference: NATRC Rule Book, Section 3.B.6. 4 North American Trail Ride Conference Rules Interpreter and Rider Eligibility –The Rules Interpreter is a member of the ride management team –A Rules Interpreter is not eligible to compete in the ride for which he is the RI –A member of the RI’s immediate family must compete DO for both horse and horsemanship if entered in the division for which the family member is RI –A horse owned by the RI must compete DO for both horse and horsemanship if entered in the division for which the family member is RI Reference: NATRC Rule Book, Section 4.D.1. 5 North American Trail Ride Conference What are the Responsibilities of the RI? –Be present for all aspects of ride during the ride including check-in, briefings, obstacles, P&Rs, check-out and awards –Explain the NATRC rules to ride management and judges as required –Notify management and judges of a rule infraction in progress –Process any disputes concerning rules interpretations –Facilitate prompt decisions on rules disputes with judges and ride management –Provide final ruling on rules dispute –Complete efficiency report and mail to NATRC office within 72 hours Reference: NATRC Rule Book, Section 3.B.6. 6 North American Trail Ride Conference The Rules Interpreter Report –The ONLY written documentation of a ride other than the results –Contains ALL aspects of a ride: Praise for things done well Suggestions for improvement –Not the “NATRC police report” or “tattle tale” on ride management –One tool used to improve NATRC rules, ride locations, judging practices and administration –Needs to be honest and complete R.I.D.E. Rules Interpreters Do Everything

8 North American Trail Ride Conference Interesting Circumstances and what to do –Inclement weather (tornadoes, torrential rain, etc.) –You witness a rules infraction by rider –A rider reports a rules infraction of any kind –Maps, mileage and/or timing are incorrect –Stabling is inconsistent –Judges are breaking the rules –Management is breaking the rules For all of the above, confer with judges and ride management to resolve [timing, pace, mileage, obstacle, stabling, penalty points and/or P&R] issues. If any of these examples (or others) occur, include them in the Rules Interpreter Report. Do not leave anything out! R.I.D.E. Rules Interpreters Do Everything
