Limewater Put on some goggles. Blow gently into the limewater through the straw. DO NOT SUCK UP THE LIMEWATER. Keep doing this until you see a change in the limewater.  What happens to the limewater?  What gas do your breathe out?  Why do you think you breathe it out? The Burning Candle Light the candle. CAREFUL! Blow out the match and leave it on the mat. Now put the jar over the candle.  What types of energy does a candle give out?  What happened when you put the jar over it?  Why did this happen?

Plants Plants are very important. Without them there would be no animals on the Earth. Plants carry out a process called photosynthesis. They use water and carbon dioxide to make food and oxygen.  What gas do plants make?  Why is this so important to animals?  What gas do plants need?  How do animals help plants to get this gas? Jelly Babies Try a jelly baby. While you are chewing press play on the video clip.  What ingredient make jelly babies taste sweet?  In the video clip the jelly baby was heated with a lot of oxygen. What happened?

Thermometers Use the glass thermometer to take the temperature of the room. Use the strip thermometer to take the temperature of your partner.  Was your partner warmer, colder or the same temperature as the room?  Mammals (like humans) are warm-blooded. What does this mean?  In some ways humans are a bit like candles. Explain this. Mirror, Mirror Breathe onto the cold mirror.  What forms on the mirror?  What does your breath look like on a cold day?  Why do these things happen?

Respiration Activities – Answer Sheet Name…………………………………………………………… Limewater This experiment showed me that I breathe out the gas……………………… ……………………….. The Burning Candle This experiment showed me that a fuel like a candle gives out ………………. and ………………….. energy. It also showed me that fuels need the gas………………………… to burn. Plants I learnt that animals cannot live without plants. This is because: Jelly Babies I tasted a jelly baby. They taste sweet because they contain …………………… Jelly babies contain lots of energy. I saw this on the video clip because when the jelly baby was heated with lots of oxygen it…………………………………………………………………………………. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….……. Thermometers Humans are like candles because they give out energy in the form of ………………….. I know this because my temperature was ……………………… than the temperature of the room. Mirror, Mirror When I breathed on the mirror ………………….. formed on it. This is because our breath contains ………………. vapour which condenses on the cold mirror.

The hatchetfish has light-producing cells on its belly, which give out a pale blue light that looks like daylight shining through the water. This clever camouflage helps to make these fish invisible from below so it's difficult for predators to spot them. The light itself is provided by colonies of luminescent bacteria that live on the squids, the researchers report in Friday's issue of the journal Science.
