The most important thing is to be knowledgeable about the mentor’s research. Why? How are you going to learn about the mentor’s research?

Read abstracts Read primary articles, including review articles Summarize research in your own words

Read background material from an advanced textbook Come to SGI and talk to ME! Summarize the readings in your own words Why is it important to write it in your own words?

Look in the discussion section of the primary article Especially the last paragraphs

Why is it a good idea to try to anticipate questions that you might be asked in the interview? What kinds of questions do you think you will be asked?

Why are you interested in doing a research project? Why are you interested in our lab? When are you available to work? (stress that you will be working full time for the next 2 summers) What ideas do you have for a research project?

Arrive early Bring a notebook, pen, mentor’s articles You can take notes during the interview Dress appropriately=business casual Boys: shirt with collar and khaki pants Girls: pants or skirt (knee length), blouse or sweater with a jacket, no skin exposed
