Every play is a story. Every story needs to have a setting. Things to consider: Where is it? When is it? Who are the characters? What is their world normally like? What is going to change to drive the story?

As with all literature, good plays aren’t just stories; they are lessons. Most have a message about one (or more) of the following: Human relationships Social/societal issues National issues Global issues Religious issues Political issues

Every story gives its message somehow. Some have characters say it directly to the audience at some point Some let the audience figure out some truth through the way events happen Some show the audience the opposite of what they want to say, and make it ironic Some make each character represent something, and tell their message symbolically

Comedy – Funny, with a happy ending. Tragedy – Dramatic, with a sad ending. Tragic comedy – Funny, with a sad ending. History - Based on reality.
