"'Mom you have to leave Dad,' I said. She stopped doing her toe touches. 'I can't believe you would say that, ' she said. 'I can't believe that you, of all people, would turn on your father.' I was Dad's last defender, she continued, the only one who pretended to believe all his excuses and tales, and to have faith in his plans for the future. 'He loves you so much,' Mom said. 'How can you do this to him?'" (Walls 188) The Changing Point
4
Loyalty "In my mind, Dad was perfect, although he did have what Mom called a little bit of a drinking situation" (Walls 23). "I felt my face turning hot. 'You're not supposed to laugh at your own father,' I said to him. 'Ever" (83). "Why do you always encourage him?" she asked. "Don't worry," I said. "Dad will fix it"(119).
5
Alcoholism and Family "After Dad collapsed we tried to pick up the place, but Mom always made me stop. She'd been reading books on how to cope with an alcoholic, and said that drunks didn't remember their rampages, so if you cleaned up after them, they'd think nothing happened." (112) "Dad had taken to disappearing for days at a time. When I asked him where he'd been, his explanations were either so vague or so improbable that I just stopped asking." (Walls 171) " 'I don't blame Dad,' I said. And I didn't. But Dad seemed hell- bent on destroying himself, and I was afraid he was going to pull us down with him. 'We've got to get away'. " (188) Jeannette turned into the person she is today partially because of her dad's alcoholismalcoholism
6
Unemployment " 'Bad news,' Lori said one day when I got home from exploring. 'Dad lost his job"(Walls 67) "It was around this time that Dad lost his job... he could find another job at a site where they hadn't spread lies about him. Then he got fired from his second job and his third, and was kicked out of the electricians' union"(110). " 'If were not charity cases, then get a job.' There was a teacher shortage in McDowell County...She could get work in a heartbeat, and when she had a salary, we could move into a little apartment in town. ' That sounds like an awful life,' Mom said"(188).
7
Money Management " ' Hon, I need some money,' he said. 'For What?' 'Beer and cigarettes."(Walls 209) "When Dad asked me for another five bucks a few days later, I gave it to him. It made me feel sick thinking I was now ten dollars off budget. In a few more days, he asked for twenty" (210).

Questionable Parenting "...he was going inside for a quick nip. Mom put on some red lipstick and joined him, even though she didn't drink anything stronger than tea. They had been inside for hours"(Walls 29). " ' Your brother was trying to tell us that you'd fallen out, but he was blubbering so damned hard we couldn't understand a word he was saying' "(31).
9
Hunger " 'But Mom,' I said, 'that ring could get us a lot of food'." " 'That's true,' Mom said, 'but it could also improve my self-esteem. And times like these, self-esteem is even more vital than food' " (Walls 186). "We pigged out on the chocolates, and from then on, whenvere Mom was too busy to make dinner or we were out of food, we'd go back to the Dumpster to see if any new chocolate was waiting for us" (110).
