3 3 Definition Transportation Services cover services provided by all modes of transportation performed by residents of one economy for those of another

4 4 Transportation Services Includes: Carriage of passengers (passenger) Movement of goods (freight) Rentals (charters) of carriers with crew (freight) Also includes supporting and auxiliary services such as: –Cargo handling –Navigation fees –Maintenance and cleaning of carriers

5 5 Transportation Services Excludes: Cruise Fares (Travel) Transportation within economy of provider (Travel) Goods procured in ports (Goods) Major repairs of transport equipment (goods) Repairs of facilities, for example: –Railway (Construction services) –Harbours (Construction services) –Docks (Construction services) –Airfields (Construction services)

7 7 Australian Data Sources Survey of International Trade in Services BOP 24 – Non-Resident Producers of Sea Transportation Services BOP 25 – Australian Resident Producers of Sea Transportation Services BOP 30 – Non-Resident Producers of Air Transportation Services BOP 31 – Australian Resident Producers of Air Transportation Services International Merchandise Trade (imports) – used to model freight services debits

9 9 Passenger Services - Definition All services provided between Australians and abroad, or between two foreign economies, involving the international transportation of non- resident persons by resident carriers (credit) and of resident persons by non-resident carriers (debit)

10 10 Passenger services - in practice Residents report revenue earned from international tickets sold abroad Non-residents report revenue earned from ticket sales in Australia Adjustments are made to passenger fare earnings by resident and non-resident carriers Domestic transportation involving non-residents within Australia is included in travel services All transportation of residents overseas (ie on carriage, internal transportation) are included in transportation debits Cruise fares are excluded from transportation

14 14 Calculation of freight - Debits Modelled using imports data CIF less FOB = value of freight and insurance Model estimates freight as a % of total freight and insurance Freight on imports provided by residents is removed from total freight Calculate freight on petroleum separately from other goods

16 16 Other Transportation Services Includes a variety of services provided by residents to non-resident (and vice versa) including: –Cargo handling (loading an unloading of containers etc) –Storage and warehousing –Customs agency services –Counter and baggage services –Maintenance and operations –Agency fees associated with passenger and freight transportation

18 18 Publication In Australia we publish transportation by type of service, that is: –Passenger, freight and other International standards call for dissection by mode of transportation: –Sea, air, other (NB rail, road are not applicable for Australia)
