19 http://staff.harrisonburg.k12.va.us/staff/~hherlan/ValleyPrg2010.pdf “SUMMING IT UP”… What Have We Learned?… We MUST Maximize our work and efforts! Think ahead! Work and Think SMARTER, not HARDER. A minute now could save hours/days later. Plan AHEAD, and always WORK LIKE A TEAM. Arguing points might be fun, but it is not at all productive and often side-tracks the “real” work that should be getting done. Always Check YOUR Contest Guidelines, as well as the Addendum materials before, during, AND after your work. Issues should be caught well before the day of your competitions. Focus on what we KNOW, and take time to LEARN what we don’t know. More information is often far better than not enough. If you know it, you will “show it”. Spending a LOT of time and energy on something unsure is a waste of time. Spending a little extra time on what we KNOW IS WORKING can make ALL the difference. A few extra minutes of working together and reviewing strategy can be all that is needed to turn a 3 rd Place into a 1 st place, or to give you a place at all. The choice is YOURS to make. Check, Check, and Check again! Then recheck to make sure that all bases are covered, and that all is where it needs to be, when it needs to be there.

20 http://staff.harrisonburg.k12.va.us/staff/~hherlan/ValleyPrg2010.pdf “SUMMING IT UP”… What Have We Learned?… Don’t forget, it is often all simply a factor of time… YOUR time, well spent?… Time spent sublimating a piece of plastic, and vacuum forming it in to a mold- 2 Hours. Time taken to ruin that same form with the belt sander- 2 Seconds. Time spent working with others to ensure that checklists are completed- Minutes/day. Time taken to search for misplaced notes, documents, computer, and systems- Hours. Time spent reading about what is required for a contest- Minutes/day. Time spent thinking about how that one minute per day cost your team a place in competitions? There is no good answer here because you will remember it for the rest of your life… Consider this… How much time/money/resources was spent on the competition(s) that YOU selected to do? How did this pay off for you and our school/chapter? Were the inputs reasonably rewarded based on the output results achieved? If so, keep going… If not, we MUST re-think our strategy, and plan future activities accordingly. OUTPUT FEEDBACK INPUTPROCESS
