2 Imperialism The domination by one country of the political, economic, or cultural life of another country or region.  Took place in the 1500s and 1600s  Based on the settlement of colonies through conquest and annexation  Ex. American colonies

3 New Imperialism European powers worked to directly govern large areas occupied by non-European peoples (Africa & Asia)  Took place from 1870 to 1914  New forms of control were used, including protectorates and spheres of influence  Ex. The Scramble for Africa

6 Causes of New Imperialism 1. Economic Interests o Related to industrialization and the need for raw materials to manufacture goods 2. Political & Military interests o Rivalry between European nations created competition over establishing colonies o Nationalism caused leaders to create global empires to increase their power

7 Causes of New Imperialism 3. Social/Cultural Interests o Racist beliefs that Europeans were superior (Social Darwinism) o Desire to spread European style of government, customs, and Christian values 4. Technological Advancements  Medical knowledge, advances in weaponry and overseas travel
