Imperialism The domination by one country of the political, economic, or cultural life of another country or region. Took place in the 1500s and 1600s Based on the settlement of colonies through conquest and annexation Ex. American colonies

New Imperialism European powers worked to directly govern large areas occupied by non-European peoples (Africa & Asia) Took place from 1870 to 1914 New forms of control were used, including protectorates and spheres of influence Ex. The Scramble for Africa

Causes of New Imperialism 1. Economic Interests o Related to industrialization and the need for raw materials to manufacture goods 2. Political & Military interests o Rivalry between European nations created competition over establishing colonies o Nationalism caused leaders to create global empires to increase their power

Causes of New Imperialism 3. Social/Cultural Interests o Racist beliefs that Europeans were superior (Social Darwinism) o Desire to spread European style of government, customs, and Christian values 4. Technological Advancements Medical knowledge, advances in weaponry and overseas travel
