3 What help is available? Student Loan for Tuition Fees Student Loan for Maintenance Maintenance Grant Special Support Grant Bursaries Scholarships Extra help for individual circumstances - Disabled Students Allowance and Parents Learning Allowance

4 Tuition Fees For 2008 entry – up to £3,145 per year (at University’s discretion) Fees capped until 2010 (plus inflation) Student Loan for Tuition Fees available: -not means tested -up to the maximum fee charged -repayable after graduation

5 Student Loan for Maintenance Student loans available for everyone. 75% is non-means tested, 25% dependent on income Living in London Living elsewhere Staying at home Maximum £6,475£4,625£3,580 75% not assessed £4,885£3,470£2,685 Remainder assessed £1,620£1,155£895

6 Maintenance and Special Support Grants £2,835 means-tested grant This is non-repayable Family income £25,000 = maximum grant Family income £25,001 – £60,005 = partial grant Family income above £60,005 = no grant Students receiving Maintenance Grant will have their Maintenance Student Loans reduced Special Support Grant does not reduce Maintenance Student Loan

7 Bursaries and Scholarships Students who qualify for a full Maintenance or Special Support Grant will also be entitled to a bursary The bursary must be at least £305 (2007/8). Average is £1000 Additional bursaries for healthcare, social work and teacher training Universities may also choose to offer scholarships, not necessarily linked to grant entitlement. Universities also have Access to Learning Funds for students in financial difficulty.

8 How do I apply? For 2009/10 entry, students apply through Student Finance England (launching Sept 08) Need to apply each year Loans and grants payable in 3 instalments

9 Repayments Both tuition fee loans and living costs loans must be repaid. Repayment begins April after graduation Must be earning over £15, 000 to begin repayment Repaid at 9% of earnings over threshold
