3 TCDSB Long Term Accommodation Plan ISSUES AND CHALLENGES Capacity and Utilization The trend for the Toronto Catholic District School Board has been declining numbers in student enrolment The decline results in an increase of surplus space in schools that have more capacity than is required for the number of students enrolled In 2000/2001, 14 of our elementary schools were below 60% with none being below 60% in our secondary schools In 2005/2006, 156 of our elementary schools were above 60% capacity and 15 were at or below 60% capacity In 2005/2006, 30 of our secondary schools were above 60% capacity and 2 were at or below 60% capacity

8 TCDSB Long Term Accommodation Plan Enrolment Information Since 1998-1999, the elementary enrolment has declined by approximately 9% or 6,021 students and the secondary enrolment has also declined by approximately 9% or 2,945 students Over the next 10 years, the elementary enrolment is projected to decline by less than 1% and the secondary enrolment is projected to decline by a further 6% The next two slides demonstrate the enrolment projections for each panel over the next 10 years

12 TCDSB Long Term Accommodation Plan Major factors contributing to this decline are: –Decline in the preschool aged population –Long term trend of women waiting longer to have children –Decline in the Birth Rate (# of births/1,000 people in the population) –Decline in Fertility Rate (Estimates the average number of children women aged 15 – 49 will have in their lifetime) –Change in the immigration patterns (immigration from traditionally non-Catholic countries) –Increase in Private School Enrolment

As you can see, the elementary and secondary service factors have decreased from 1991 to 1996.
