2
What is Thermite? Mix of aluminum powder and iron oxide [1] Once ignited, produces extreme temperatures Produced from union of aluminum and oxygen in oxide [2] Thermite Powder [A]
3
Uses of Thermite? Burns at temperatures of approx. 2500°C (4532°F) [3] Used for wielding/ cutting through metals Most often used on train tracks Tracks don’t need to be removed No need for heavy machinery [4] Used to purify metals Aluninothermic Reaction [4] Thermite Wielding [B]
4
How Thermites Made Materials: Iron Oxide (rust)- Fine powder Aluminum powder Magnesium ribbon- to light thermite [3] Flowerpot- to contain burning thermite [3] Aluminum Powder [C] Magnesium Ribbon [D]
5
How Thermites Made 8 to 3 weight ratio of iron oxide to aluminum powder [3] Mix very thoroughly Pour mixture into container Stick in magnesium ribbon and slightly fray end [3] Unmixed Thermite [A]
