AUSTRALIAN SPORTS 1. RUGBY 2. CRICKET 3. AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL

RUGBY Rugby Union is played between two teams of 15 players, 8 forwards and 7 backs, using an oval shaped ball. It is a full contact team sport and is played on a field with H-shaped goalposts on each goal line.

A rugby match is played in two halves of 40 minutes. The team that scores the most points wins the match. Points can be scored in several ways: a) with a try when a player passes the goal line and is worth 5 points, b) a conversion kick after the try worth 2 points and c) a penalty kick or a drop kick goal each worth 3 points.

In rugby players do not wear any protective gear, like for example American football, only their rugby shirts, shorts and boots. Exciting features of the match are scrums and lineouts. Rugby is the only sport in which you are not allowed to pass the ball forwards. You have to pass the ball backwards.

Rugby is also played in Greece and there is a championship for teams of 15 players and one for teams consisting of 7 players. In April we were lucky to welcome the ‘Egaleo City’ rugby team of 7s at our school. The club president and some Greek national team players showed our students how the game is played and students participated in various activities in the schoolyard.

CRICKET Cricket is a bat and ball game, played between two teams of 11 players each. One team bats attempting to score runs, while the other bowls and fields trying to get the batsman out.

The bowler delivers the ball to the batsman who attempts to hit the ball with his bat away from the fielders so he can run to the other end of the pitch and score a run. If the ball hits the wicket then the batsman is out. A batsman is also out if a fielder catches the ball in the air.

The cricket ground is usually oval with a rectangular pitch at the centre. At each end of the pitch there is a wooden target called a wicket. Cricket players wear protective gear like: helmets, gloves and batting pads.

AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL Australian or Aussie Rules Football is played only in Australia. It is played between two teams of 18 players on an oval football ground.

The main way to score points is by kicking the football between the two central goalposts for a goal (6 points) or the two shorter outer posts for a behind(1 point).

A match has 4 quarters which consist of 25 minutes of play. You can move the ball by kicking it, passing it with a handball (you cannot throw the football) and running with the ball but you have to bounce it every 15 metres. It is a contact sport and you can stop opponents by tackling them using your hands, but not above the shoulder.

An exciting feature of the game is the mark where players catch the ball in the air, sometimes jumping on the backs of other players which is allowed.
