About loveLife loveLife has been promoting healthy, HIV-free living among South African teenagers since 1999. The approach is based on addressing the individual, social and structural factors leading to high risk tolerance and a perception of scant opportunity among teenagers. loveLife combines a sustained nationwide multi-media campaign with community-level outreach and support programmes for youth. goGogetter Programme and the role of older South Africans and women in particular in caring for those affected by HIV/AIDS loveLife implemented the goGogetter programme in response to increasing AIDS deaths within the adult population, thus leaving a number of children orphaned and uncared for. The number of adults dying have doubled in the last decade and even tripled in some sectors, and approximately 1 in six children have lost a parent and close to 2 million have lost both parents (UNAIDS/WHO: 2010). Grandmother care in South Africa is not new. Apartheid migrant labour system took many adults away from their families, living children with women and mainly grandmothers. This meant that grandmothers have for decades been a valuable aspect of South Africa’s social capital, and thus made sense to include them in programming during the HIV epidemic. When loveLife recogised the need for adolescent OVC support, many of our own youth volunteers (gBs and Mpintshis) were experiencing losses of one or both parents, thus the need for structured adult support became clearer. Grandmothers care and are trusted by families and communities. Why goGogetter Programme?
