oneone WE-3 Objective: To identify the causes of seasons in order to determine climatic patterns on the Earth Atmosphere Note: What causes seasons to occur? Drill: 1. Get a new ditto from the SET. 2. Complete Activity 1, a and b.

oneone WE-3 OPEN DISCUSSION 1.What do you think now? 2.Record your revised ideas in your log book.

oneone WE-3 Activity 3: Science Court – Seasons Take notes on the front and/or on the back of your sheet.

oneone WE-3 HOMEWORK: Why do we have seasons? 1.Explain in your own words. 2.Use paragraph form. 3.Provide examples when necessary. 4.Write in your Log Book. 5.SEE the Answer!!!

oneone WE-3 Objective: To explore the angles that the sun’s rays strike the Earth in order to explain the seasons. Atmosphere Note: What causes seasons to occur? Drill: 1. Take out yesterdays ditto and your log book. 2. Wait for directions.

oneone WE-3 Science Court – Seasons Notes 1.The Earth is tilted on its axis (23 1/3 o ). 2.The Earth rotates (spins) once a day. 3.The Earth revolves around the sun once a year. 4.The sun’s rays strike the Earth directly in some areas an indirectly (with slanted rays) in other areas. 5.An area of the Earth may be tilted towards the sun, away from the sun or neither.

oneone WE-3 1.Why do you think that the rays of sunlight that do not strike the Earth directly, do not produce as much heat energy as the ones that do? 2.What about the angle causes a decrease in energy? DISCUSS IN GROUPS

oneone WE-3 DEFINITION Angles of Insolation: the angles at which the sun’s rays strike the Earth’s surface

oneone WE-3 DEMOS 1.Flashlight 2.Hitting a Baseball 3.Karate/Boxing 4.Can you think of your own example? 5.Let’s Visit the Earth

oneone WE-3 RECAP The sun’s rays strike the equator almost directly. The angle at this point is close to 90 degrees. This angle provides the most heat energy. At smaller angles the sun’s energy is more spread out. Therefore there is less heat energy in a given region and lower temperatures. This happens at higher latitudes. It also occurs at dawn and dusk … and during the winter.

oneone WE-3 HOMEWORK: Ditto: Seasoned to Perfection
