Starter Activity Embedding a Clause

Sentence level starter activity. ‘Embedding a clause.’ There are two types of clause; a main clause and a subordinate clause A main clause can operate as a sentence on its own A subordinate clause cannot but adds more detail to the sentence

‘Feeling a little uneasy’ ‘John entered the attic’ Subordinate clause Main clause

Now write out the sentence as many ways a you can! John entered the attic, feeling a little uneasy. Feeling a little uneasy, John entered the attic. These two sentences are entirely correct but try placing the subordinate clause INSIDE the main clause.

John, feeling a little uneasy, entered the attic. Notice now how the subordinate clause is located WITHIN the main clause! This is called ‘embedding the clause’ and makes your written work that much more sophisticated.

The end!
