Simple Sentence: 1 independent clause –Racers ride laps around a three-mile course filled with obstacles

Compound Sentence: 2 or more independent clauses –Europeans have been enjoying cyclocross for decades, and now the sport is growing in the United States.

Complex Sentence: 1 independent clause + at least 1 subordinate clause –Every few laps, cyclists stop in the pit area, where mechanics change tires and make adjustments.

Compound-Complex Sentence: 2 or more independent clauses + at least 1 subordinate clause –Maya Angelou, who is one of our country’s most gifted authors, has written short stories, novels, plays, and poems; but she is perhaps best known for her autobiographical work I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
