5. Complex Sentence:  1 independent clause + at least 1 subordinate clause –Every few laps, cyclists stop in the pit area, where mechanics change tires and make adjustments.

6. Compound-Complex Sentence:  2 or more independent clauses + at least 1 subordinate clause –Maya Angelou, who is one of our country’s most gifted authors, has written short stories, novels, plays, and poems; but she is perhaps best known for her autobiographical work I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.
