Recent Experiences in Paediatrics That May Influence Future Training Needs Journey to date in getting children with complex physical health care needs discharged and managed in the community setting Ventilated teenagers now getting prepared to transition to adult services Awareness of Hyponatraemia Risk in Children Earlier discharge of Neonates into the community

Other Factors in Paediatrics That May Influence Future Training Needs Difficulty in getting full allocation of doctors in training posts – Gaps in Rota ‘Overdue But Welcome’ Paediatric Strategy Extended Role of the Registered Nurse Extended Role of the Health Care Assistant Transforming Your Care (TYC)

ChangesShort Term Changes 0 – 2 years Medium Term Changes 2 years + Acute Paediatrics What will change? -Development of Short Stay Assessment Unit. Less inpatient beds -Continuation of transferring out critically ill children and managing High Dependency locally. - Age of children admitted to Acute wards will increase from 14 years to 16 years (possibly 18 years). New challenge will be Adolescent Mental Health. Who is affected? -Ward based staff Learning Needs -Development of APNP to work in SSAU -Caring for the High Dependency at DGH - CPAP Training - APLS / PILS - Child & Adolescent Mental Health Interventions

Service AreaChangesShort Term Changes 0 – 2 years Medium Term Changes 2 years + Community Paediatrics What will change? -Moving to 7 day service -More General Paediatrics on case loads as well as Palliative Care -Supporting Specialist Nurses in managing long term conditions e.g. Diabetes - ? Home oxygen treatment for babies with bronchiolitis Who is affected? -CCN teams Learning Needs -Updates and up skilling in Acute General Paediatrics -New insulin treatments and regimes

Service AreaChangesShort Term Changes 0 – 2 years Medium Term Changes 2 years + NeonatalWhat will change? - On going treatments which are evidence based such as - cooling treatment - nitrate treatment - Ongoing developments / research will inform changes in treatments Who is affected? - Neonatal workforce (registered and unregistered) Learning Needs -Specific training as new treatments are introduced

Other Considerations for the Future HCA’s – Training to be accredited ? Emergency Department / Theatres require alternative to RN (Child) qualification for their staff Developing more nursing roles to support keeping children with long term conditions out of hospital
