Eye Play

Table of contents Tobii Eye Gaze The project The client Research The roles inside the group The roles inside the group Result The Artefact

The Client The client is Freddie Davis, who works at Claremont School, which is a school for children with special needs. The project request consisted in the design and development of a series of games to be used on Tobii Eye Gaze devices by children with serious physical disabilities, who can control the device only by using their eyes.

The Project Title: Eye Play Software: Flash (animations, coding in ActionScript3), Illustrator (drawing) Purpose: Entertainment Audience: 12 - 16 year old children with disabilities (low control of the body) Challenge: The games had to be developed in order to be played without using the “click” function of the mouse, only the “mouseover” function. This restriction appeared in order to allow the implementation of the eye tracking feature (using the SDK software). Type: group project (3 members) Format: Flash games

Tobii Eye Gaze Tobii Dynavox is a company that develops devices to help people with limited or no speech by offering the possibility to communicate with others. More over the eye tracking devices, controlled through gaze interaction, are extremely useful to individuals with very low physical skills.

Research The client recommended, as a good source of inspiration, a game application called “Look to learn”. He also insisted that the games should have different levels of difficulty to be suitable for children with more or less physical skills. The group has researched the already existing games and it was discovered that, in terms of design, the drawings were created from basic, contoured shapes, there were used bright colours and the button links were very wide. All this properties had the purpose to make the items easier to identify, always having in mind the target audience.

The artefact is formed from 3 games, that can only be played by using the “mouseover” function of the mouse. The links can be accessed when the pointer touches the red dots. The Artefact

A jigsaw game where the user can choose to reconstruct from four images. Different levels of difficulty Are also available and so there are games with 4, 6 and 8 pieces. A “Whack-a mole” type of game where the player can choose from a selection of three weapons, which one to use to hit the mole. For this game, the player has to place each item on the right place. It is a good way to practice the eye control skills. The Games Where’s what? The adventures of Dog and Bone Whack-a-Mole

My role inside the group Conceived and designed the logo, the “welcome screen” and all of the games; Applied ActionScript3 code to “Where’s what?” and “Whack-a-Mole” games; Holding presentation in front of students and supervisors. Other roles inside the group Research; Development of the jigsaw games with help from the group supervisor; Time management; Keeping in touch with the client; Preparing and holding presentation in front of students and supervisors; Writing a group report about the artefact.

Result The client was satisfied with the final result, as he stated in several e-mails. The project was appreciated with an 80% grade.
