What are bone markings and why are they important?

Bone markings are features visible on the surface of bones. Each marking has a specific function. These markings allow medical professionals to perform highly sensitive tasks. ◦ The mental foramen in the chin is used by dentists to administer anesthesia. ◦ Assists in location of injection site for epidural and thoracocentesis.

Foramen ( hole) a passage through which blood vessels, nerves or ligaments pass. Meatus ( passage) a tubelike channel extending within a bone Fossa ( ditch) a shallow depresssion

Condyle ( knuckle-like) large rounded prominence Head – rounded projection that is support by a narrow portion (neck) of a bone Facet – smooth flat surface

Tuberosity – large, rounded projection with a rough surface Spine – sharp, slender projection Trochanter – Large blunt projection only on femur Crest – Prominent ridge or border
