What Are Political Parties? A group of people who think alike on major issues Want people who think like them to get elected so that they can make decisions in the government

What Do Political Parties Do? Support politicians who are a part of their political party Raise money Plan party-sponsored events Run commercials and ads for the party and its candidates

Democrats: Big government More government support for social services Lower taxes for people making less than $250,000 a year Most registered voters of any political party (72 million)

Republicans: Smaller government Minimum government control of the economy Lower taxes for all people 55 million registered voters

Third Parties: Any political party that is not the Democrats or Republicans Draw attention to issues that might be ignored Take votes away from Democrat and Republican candidates

Summary: There are two main political parties in the US- Republicans and Democrats. They have different beliefs and both parties try to get support from others for their candidates and raising money. Third parties also exist in the US and they take votes away from Reps and Dems.
