2 Traditionally the two great contrasting genres of dramas are tragedy and comedy. The first definition of tragedy was provided by the Greek philosopher Aristotle in the fourth century BC. Definitions have developed since then, but tragedy still generally consist of Aristotle’s ideas.

3 ☼ The play has a central character, the protagonist or tragic hero ☼ The character has a tragic flaw which contributes to his downfall ☼ The character experiences a reversal of fortune ☼ The audience feel a sense of loss, but also experience a purging of the emotions (catharsis) so at the end of the play feelings of pity/terror have passed and there is an atmosphere of peace

4 Which of Aristotle’s ideas of tragedy does Miller include in ‘Broken Glass’?  Give examples of where in the play you experience them.
