2 In colon, when bacteria digest fiber  they produce by-products  The by-products inhibit liver from making cholesterol

3 Soluble fibers trap nutrients  Delays transit of materials through the GI tract  Slows down glucose absorption  Prevents a glucose surge

4 1. May lower rate of colon cancer by diluting, binding and removing cancer causing agents from the colon 2. Soluble fiber fermented by bacteria produce fat-like molecules  provide energy for the colon to resist chemical injury that could lead to cancer formation

5 High fiber may lead to weight loss:  Less fat in high fiber foods  Contain more bulk which contributes to satiety
