What makes Gatorade so good? Why do athletes drink it?

Electrolytes A substance that ionizes when placed in a suitable solvent Include most ionic compounds (salts), acids & bases Electro – they can actually conduct electricity! When table salt is placed in the water: NaCl (s) → Na + (aq) + Cl − (aq)

“Like dissolves like”

Polarity & Solubility Polarity- separation of electric charge – Occurs from the distribution of charge in a molecule and/or the shape of the molecule – Electronegativity – the “pull” for electrons

Water is the “universal solvent” because of its polarity

Polar examples: Most ionic substances such as salts, acids, bases Nonpolar examples: noble gases, diatomics, methane

Basic Rules for Solubility Polar dissolves polar Nonpolar dissolves nonpolar Polar CANNOT dissolve nonpolar (or the other way around)
