Chapter 1: Thinking With Mathematical Models

Relating Body Measurements

Do you think height and arm span are equal for each student in our class? How would we display and analyze data to test this claim?

Focus Question: How do you calculate the standard deviation for a data distribution and what does that statistic tell about the distribution? Launch: Come up with definitions for variance and deviation.

We use graphs to help provide a picture of a distribution of data. Distributions have properties that include: statistics such as measure of central tendency (mean, median, mode) variability (outliers, range) characteristics of shape (clumps, gaps, skewed distributions) When we look at distributions, we are often interested in the measures of center, which tell us that a value is “typical” of the distribution. Any measure of center alone can be misleading, however. It is important also to consider the variability of the distribution.

Describing variability includes looking at : measures of center the range of data where data cluster or where there are gaps in a distribution the presence of outliers the shape of distribution.

What do you think is a normal height for an adult male? 5 ft 10 in (US adults aged 20-29) And for an adult female? 5 ft 4 in How rare is it for an adult male to be as tall as 6 feet 9 inches or and adult female to be as tall as 6 feet 8 inches?

1.Answers will vary. Sample: Although the data sets for basketball players and volleyball players have the same mean, the data for the basketball players are more spread out, generating a greater standard deviation. This is supported by the graph and standard deviation. Although the data set for gymnasts has a lower mean than the data set for basketball players, the standard deviation is the same meaning that the spread is the same for the distributions of heights of gymnasts and basketball players. 2.Answers will vary.
