OFFENSE – cont. Needs to be explosive We will practice by situation Long yardage, short yardage, 2-minute Score on each play in practice All plays must be scripted with an offensive play call against a specific defensive front We need to find a way to simplify the blocking scheme and play calls We need to be more balanced 50/50 – run/pass ratio

OFFENSE – cont. Must contain some form of option Triple, midline, or Utah Zone Must utilize rollout passes and/or run/pass options with the QB We need to begin grading film Both practice and game Our offense needs to be unique and exciting Give opponents something unusual to prepare for

OFFENSE – cont. We need to utilize “trick” plays Make these a part of our base offense

DEFENSE We must attack and force the action We must create turnovers This skill must be taught in practice We will use tackling circuits and turnover stations We must stress creating turnovers during team/group periods The play needs to end with a turnover or gang tackle.

DEFENSE – cont. We must get better at team pursuit and playing to the whistle. We will use double-whistles in practice. The defense must be gap control and kids must understand their gap responsibility. We will give written quizzes each week. These quizzes will be graded by the coaching staff. We will have a film study each night with a different position. Ex: Monday=DB’s, Tues.=LB’s, Wed.=DL

DEFENSE – cont. Our best eleven athletes will play defense, regardless of their offensive position. Our #1 priority as a football program must be to play great defense. Our top goals for every game must be to make tackles and create turnovers. We must find a way to recognize formation and situation quicker.

SPECIAL TEAMS We must use our special teams to control field position. We must find a way to score on special teams. Our most explosive athletes must be on all special teams. They must be designed to score touchdowns Wall returns, 10-man punt blocks, etc.

SPECIAL TEAMS – cont. We need to create changes in momentum. Onside kicks, reverses, big plays. Practice technique as well as scheme. Utilize fakes and trick plays. Devote sufficient time in practice to our specialists. We need to find a way to net 35 yards on punts. Special teams must be a priority.

PRACTICE ORGANIZATION A coach must be present in the locker room with the players at all times. Players must stay focused before games and practice. Specialists, QB’s, and centers will go out for pre-practice reps – 15min prior to the start of practice. Everything must be done correctly, intensely, and with supervision This starts in stretching.

PRACTICE ORGANIZATION – cont. Coach kids on every play. Coach hard, coach with enthusiasm, coach aggressively Bring an enthusiastic, aggressive demeanor to practice Coach fast and coach on the fly If they don’t know it, we haven’t taught it! Take responsibility for the actions and results of your position players.

PRACTICE ORGANIZATION – cont. Apply the PNP approach to coaching (positive-negative-positive). Practice plans must be developed to the minute, allow for no wasted time. No practice segment should be longer than 10 minutes. Do not have players standing around. Minimize transition time. Set up drills before practice.

PRACTICE ORGANIZATION – cont. “Talk” before practice, “Do” during practice. Use meeting times effectively with your players. Test your players with written material. Give “tip” sheets to your players at least once a week Do not let things go uncorrected in practice! Teach toughness and aggressiveness along with technique.

PRACTICE ORGANIZATION – cont. Push players to their limit Find their breaking point Do not allow kids to loaf Have a plan for every practice, segment, and drill. All coaches must be on the same page. BE LOYAL TO EACH OTHER!
