handout 1: ME 460 1 Manufacturing Systems, automation, robotics What is this course about? Context: manufacturing systems Subject: robots and automation
2
2 Manufacturing Systems Logics of presentation: System Manufacturing system manufacturing system classification handout 1: ME 460

3 System A set of components that are connected in a way to perform a task in an environment, which fulfills a mission. Example Components are: drive, frame, ram, bed, etc. They are connected in a definite way to perform a task or function handout 1: ME 460
4
4 Manufacturing system A system that has an input of material and has an output of material or part, and the output material differs from the output material in a certain area that is meaningful. Example InputOutput handout 1: ME 460

5 Manufacturing system: classification Manufacturing systems have four levels: 1. Enterprise 2. Shop floor 3. Cell or line 4. Machine Enterprise: a system that has its own independent management. Shop floor: a sub-system of an enterprise where manufacturing activities are carried out. Cell or line: a group of machines that produce a part. Machine: a single entity that changes the input material handout 1: ME 460

6 Manufacturing system: classification Manufacturing systems have four levels: 1. Enterprise 2. Shop floor 3. Cell or line 4. Machine Classification along the vertical direction: 1. Enterprise manufacturing systems 2. Shop floor manufacturing system 3. Cell or line manufacturing system 4. Machine manufacturing system handout 1: ME 460

8 Manufacturing Systems, automation, robotics What is this course about? Context: manufacturing systems Subject: automation and robots handout 1: ME 460
9
9 Automation and robots Logics of presentation: Automation Robots handout 1: ME 460
10
10 Automation Perform functions using machines without human actions. Automation can be classified into two types: - Soft automation (information flow automation) - Hard automation (material flow automation) Robots Machines that their functions or operations can be reprogrammable; that is, the change of codes can lead to the change of machines’ functions
