3 ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Goals: Include a two to three instructional goals of the lesson. Objectives: Content/Knowledge: Students should be able to name the main points of the bill of rights in a test Process/Skills: Students will be able to state the specific processes that happened in order to form the constitution and the bill of rights. Values/Dispositions: Students will be able to explain how the constitution and the bill of rights affect their lives by giving five specific examples and elaborating on them

4 ETE 335 Elementary Social Studies Lesson deBono’s Thinking Hats Rationale: Understanding the constitution and where our form of government is very important for students. It allows them to see what they will have to do in the future in order to be a functioning part of society. They will understand why it is important to voice their opinion and vote and they will understand that the constitution and bill of rights give them that option. Standards: State – Illinois Social Studies Common Core or Learning Standards 14.A.2 Explain the importance of fundamental concepts expressed and implied in major documents including the Declaration of Independence, the United States Constitution and the Illinois Constitution. 14.C.2 Describe and evaluate why rights and responsibilities are important to the individual, family, community, workplace, state and nation (e.g., voting, protection under the law). 14.F.2 Identify consistencies and inconsistencies between expressed United States political traditions and ideas and actual practices (e.g., freedom of speech, right to bear arms, slavery, voting rights). National – NCSS Themes What are Civic Life, Politics, and Government? How Does the Government Established by the Constitution Embody the Purposes, Values, and Principles of American Democracy?

5 Objective

6 We will discuss the main points in the constitution and the bill of rights Students will on a poster board in a group write down the Bill of Rights and then each group will have a different set of amendments to right on their poster board. They will then explain each amendment to the class Poster board Markers Objective

7 Intuitive

8 In class we will discuss the importance of the constitution and their feelings on important amendments. Each student will pick and amendment that means the most to them and right a diary entry explaining why they like that amendment and how it affects their lives today Intuitive

9 Positive/Strengths

10 Positive/Strengths We will talk about the process that occurred to come up with having a democracy in the United States. We will discuss and brainstorm positives of a democracy Students will describe why a democracy is a better form of government than any other and why it works so well in the United States

11 Negatives/Weaknesses

12 We will talk about the people who did not believe a democracy would work in the United States. We will also discuss the weaknesses of having a democracy Is it really good for everybody to have a say in our government ? What if somebody votes who is not educated? The students will then brainstorm negatives of a democracy. Negatives/Weaknesses

14 Creative As a class we will come up with a constitution for our classroom and then we will follow that constitution for the rest of the year In groups they will come up with their own set of bill of rights and then we will vote on the best set of bill of rights to “ratify” and we will then follow those bill of rights for the rest of the year Poster board markers

15 Thinking About Thinking

16 We will as a class talk about how we use the bill of rights and the constitution in our lives today. Students will write a story about a time that they used a bill of right or amendment in their real lives they will add illustrations and present the story to the class Paper coloring utensils

Assessment: 1. Students will be evaluated by writing a paper using three amendments of their choice and explaining each and using at least one specific example of how the students have seen the amendment used.
