3
Principles of Democracy Open up your workbooks and fill out page one. Now we’ll think about some of the issues facing our community and country.
4
Issue: subject of concern, the central or most important topic in a discussion or debate
5
Getting into groups We’ll use the following groups: Maddie, Mardie, Shaun Holland Summer, Toni, Riley Sean Harris, Jarred Tim Vo, Daniel, Bradley Danny, Mikayla, Kiani In your groups, take turns flipping through the newspapers provided. Respect them – they are the school’s and from the library and need to be handed back in the condition they came in.
6
Using magazines and newspapers... In your groups, flick through the papers and identify (using the space in your handbook) any issues that make you: Mad Sad Glad
7
Make a note about the articles that interest you the most. Note any key words or ideas or concerns that help to communicate the issue. Each group will now present their findings to the rest of the class. Why does this issue concern you the most? How might your issue affect the local community?
8
Record some of the other issues that have been raised in your workbook.
9
Exit Pass To leave the lesson you must show that you’ve completed Activity A (matching the principles of democracy to the boxes) from the handout. This was homework for last night
