TOWN MEETINGSMAYFLOWER COMPACT DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE Addressed important town issues. Virginia House of Burgesses (Representative) Ability to govern themselves. (They didn’t need kings and queens to have laws) Rules and laws of what their government should be like. Colonial Documents and Ideas Constitution: a set of basic laws and rules that state the powers and duties of government.

Republic: The people have control over the Government -The people elect representatives. Republicanism: The support for a republic government. Limited Government: All leaders have to obey the laws and no one had total power. PROTECTION OF INDIVIDUAL RIGHTS
