Science Starter At night the moon is -387 F, and during the day it is 253 F. Why do you think temperatures are so much more extreme on the moon than on earth?

Think about it… In the summer, why does the inside of a car get very hot when it is sitting in the sun? 5 The heat from the sun goes into the car. The windows on the car trap the heat inside. This makes the inside of the car heat up
6
GREENHOUSE EFFECT When incoming solar radiation (heat) is absorbed by gases in the atmosphere. Without the atmosphere, earth would be 59 F colder! (Just like the windows in a car trap heat, the gasses in the atmosphere trap heat.)
7
GREENHOUSE EFFECT What traps the heat? Water vapor (H2O) Carbon dioxide (CO2) Nitrous oxide (N2O) Methane (CH4) These are called “greenhouse gases.” The more greenhouse gases in the troposphere, the warmer our planet gets.

Foldable - inside 5 Causes of global warming OR 3 Causes and 1 picture Definition of global warming Definition of green house gas effect Complete description of what greenhouse gases are doing to our Earth 5 changes to our Earth as a result of global warming OR 3 changes and 1 picture

1. Which greenhouse gas is the most abundant in our atmosphere? a.Oxygen b. Carbon Dioxide c. Nitrous Oxided. Methane 2. Which of the following has caused the greatest increase in global warming? a. Burning of fossil fuels c. People breathing out b. Increases in atmospheric nitrogend. Turning lights off 3. The burning of fossil fuels is causing an increase in the following: a.Atmospheric nitrogen b.Atmospheric oxygen c.Atmospheric carbon dioxide d.Atmospheric phosphate 4. What is the main source of methane in our atmosphere: a. Chemical manufacturingc. Cow flatulence and feedlots b. Cutting down treesd. humans exhaling EXIT Ticket
16
Foldable - inside Burning of fossil fuels adds CO 2 and other greenhouse gases to atmosphere Urbanization creates heat islands and causes deforestation Fewer trees to take in CO 2 Greenhouse effect traps heat in atmosphere Global warming: an increase in global temperatures as a result of increases in CO 2 levels (and other greenhouse gases) Melting ice caps and glaciers o Leads to rise in sea level o Loss of habitat for polar animals Change in weather patterns Floods, droughts, more intense storms Loss of plant and animal species
17
Greenhouse gases Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 ) – Emitted through burning fossil fuels Methane (CH 4 ) – Emitted during production of fossil fuels Nitrous Oxide (N 2 O) – Emitted during farming and industrial activities F-gases – Ex: hydrofluorocarbons – Emitted during industrial processes How are greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere?
18
How is agriculture affected by climate change? In the long run, climactic change would affect agriculture in many ways – Lower quality/quantity of crops – Agricultural practices like fertilizers and insecticides – Soil drainage and erosion – Reduction of crop diversity – Less competition among organisms
19
How is species diversity affected by climate change? Species that depend on one another may become out of sync. For example, plants could bloom earlier than their pollinating insects become active
20
How is ecosystem balance affected by climate change? Ecosystems will change— some species will move farther north or become more successful; others won’t be able to move and could become extinct. Ex: Polar Bears Discovery ed: The Impact of Climate Change on Polar Bears
21
How are oceans impacted by climate change? Ocean Acidification: The ongoing decrease in the pH of the Earth's oceans caused by the uptake of CO 2 from the atmosphere. A more acidic ocean could wipe out species, disrupt the food web and impact fishing and tourism.
22
How are sea levels impacted by climate change? Higher temperatures cause ice to melt Water absorbs more heat than ice so temperatures will continue to rise This causes shoreline erosion and coastal flooding http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-xLokKVdk7I
23
How are weather patterns changed by climate change? More intense heat waves and droughts in some region and fewer events in other places are predicted.
