Where: Sludge age = Mean cell residence time. Also can expressed in terms of volatile suspended solids. SSe = Suspended Solids in Wastewater Effluent SSw = Suspended Solids in Waste Sludge

5 Return sludge rate Expressed as percentage of raw wastewater effluent.
