Emotional Intelligence Salovey and Mayer (1997)
2
Definition The ability to perceive and express emotion, understand and reason with emotion and regulate emotion in oneself and others
3
Emotional Emotion refers to a feeling with accompanying thoughts and physiological responses that communicates information about relationships.
4
Intelligence The cognitive ability to reason in appropriate ways when using and interpreting emotional information
5
The Theory Emotional Intelligence is and ability based model. There are 4 abilities Self perception Thought Foundation Social Understanding Relationship
6
Ability 1: Self Perception Awareness of one’s own emotions and ability to perceive others emotions
9
Ability 2: Thought Foundation The ability to use emotions to assist thought - being able to use emotions to think more clearly or effectively. Who knows which mood they study best in? Or which mood they best play sport in? Or which emotion produces the most creativity out of them?
10
Ability 3:Social Understanding The ability to understand the meaning of emotions, their causes and consequences and understand change Why might someone be angry and what might happen because they are angry
11
Ability 4: Relationship management The ability to manage emotions to promote intellectual growth in yourself and in others. This ability also involves being open to feelings, both pleasant and unpleasant; being able to monitor and reflect on one’s emotions and those of others; and the ability to engage in, stay in or detach from (‘set aside’) an emotional state when it is appropriate to do so.
12
What does this mean? Having good ability in this area means that you can control your personal feelings when required and not become overwhelmed by anxiety or anger. It also means that you can deal with someone else’s emotions competently; for example, by knowing what to say or do.
