2
Overview Phosphorus ROBO Background information Existing data What needs to be done
3
ROBO Background Developed to mimic Sequence IIIGA –Rheology only Specifically used oil TP-1 MRV But also good correlation to pVis –Oxidation chemistry –Fluid volatilization Appears in ILSAC GF-5 draft
4
Phosphorus by ROBO Pros –Bench test –ROBO mimics an engine procedure Chemistry and volatility –‘Free’ procedure (if ROBO were to be included in GF-5) –Already undergoing ASTM development Piggyback precision testing –Can measure both volatile and retained P Cons –Limited background P data Least P data development amongst candidate tests –No field correlation data –Considering the above …. could timeline be met?
5
Data In-Hand RohMax (GM request) –Sequence IIIG matrix oils ExxonMobil –ROBO discriminates between primary and secondary ZDDP ChevronOronite –Two oils

ROBO vs Seq IIIG for P Retention ChevronOronite Comments ROBO P retention correlates with IIIG reference oils (courtesy: RohMax and GM) –TMC 43480.3% –TMC 43588.8% –TMC 43881.% Provides an 8.5% separation between 434 and 435

9
ROBO for P Retention ChevronOronite Information ROBO repeatability is a concern –Two repeats (B) differ by 10% –A third (A) is different only in base stock Will require more study or development
10
What Needs to Be Done A lot Need more data –Field test oils (reference oils) –More on discriminating ZDDP types –Other formulation effects –Precision Severity adjustments?
11
Could ROBO Be Made More Severe? Probably … some thoughts –Temperature –Time –Air flow through system –Oxidation catalysts But significant changes would create a new Phosphorus-ROBO (PROBO) Would negate some advantages –Free test –ASTM procedure development –ASTM precision development
