2. What is a heat engine?
A heat engine is any device that changes internal energy into mechanical work.
The mechanical work can only be obtained when heat flows from a hot temperature to a low one.

First, heat flows out of a high-temperature reservoir into the heat engine.
Next, some of that heat is converted into work.
The rest of the heat flows into a low-temperature reservoir

In a gas engine, the combustion chamber is the high-temperature reservoir, the pistons are where the converting of heat to work happens, and the low-temperature reservoir is out the exhaust
