1 Functions, Purpose, and Examples
Heat Engines Functions, Purpose, and Examples

2 What is a heat engine? A heat engine is any device that changes internal energy into mechanical work. The mechanical work can only be obtained when heat flows from a hot temperature to a low one.

3 How do heat engines work?
First, heat flows out of a high-temperature reservoir into the heat engine. Next, some of that heat is converted into work. The rest of the heat flows into a low-temperature reservoir

4 What are examples of heat engines?
Some examples of heat engines are steam engines, internal combustion engines, jet engines, and gas engines In a gas engine, the combustion chamber is the high-temperature reservoir, the pistons are where the converting of heat to work happens, and the low-temperature reservoir is out the exhaust

5 The Second Law of Thermodynamics and Other
The second law of thermodynamics states that heat engines will never convert ALL heat input into work When expelled heat is not needed or wanted, that means there is thermal pollution.

6 Questions What is one example of a heat engine?
Heat engines turn heat energy into what kind of work? What is one other thing that heat engines convert heat into?
