Mindful Shift Chapter 12
2
“Of all species on earth, we human have the capacity of mind change: we change our minds and that of others”
3
Think out of the box vs. reshaping the box –This reshaping is constantly and is based on the context or situation used in order to survive –Think about the box and adjust it = complexity theory order come out of chaos, through the development of relationships in order to create “equilibrium” (Piaget)
4
A mindful leader is able to achieve results because all the resources and connections are at hand these resources and connections would allow the leader to push for a perceptual shift Mind Map
5
Perception is a process in which we make sense of the world –It organizes the world into mental models which helps us conduct our affairs –Perception will direct behaviors regardless of the quality of the perception however, at best, perceptual formations (self generated beliefs) contribute to a positive constructive world
6
The process of how perception influence behaviors is as follows: –Information perception (interpretation) behavior feedback and again and again… When faulty perceptions occur, faulty behaviors follows Rigidity is another downside is a paralysis of the mindset –Therefore, we need meaningful shift on how you see and do leadership New solid information which change perspectives Actively engages in: attending, articulating applying and adjusting information
7
Bandura suggests that there are 3 key elements for understanding a shift in thought –Knowledge is necessary but not sufficient to produce behavior change motivation, skills, and environmental circumstances are also necessary –Behavior is mediated through cognition (thinking): “what we know and think affects the way we act” –People and their environment interact continuously influencing the resultant behavior
8
Gardner: changes in minds ultimately involve changing behaviors: there are 7 factors that leverage these shifts in perspectives: –Reason (assessment of options) –Research (collection of relevant data) –Resonance (affective response and feeling) –Redescriptions (numerical, linguistic and graphic representations) –Resources and rewards (psychological and material reinforcement) –Real world events (push toward alternative new paths) –Resistances (comfort, familiarity, fear, etc)
9
Behavior Change Through Perceptual Shift: –Precontemplation no change lack of awareness –Contemplation information informs and forms our thinking –Proactive reflection preparation for making changes occurs knowledge, skills and positive attitudes are present (sense of self efficacy) –Action change is made by acting on acquired information, skills and attitudes (prior knowledge) –Reaction evaluation of the effects of the change Perceptual shifts and behavior change occur over time for this to occur the following must be present
10
There is commitment No constraints Knowledge and skills necessary to perform Belief that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages + / - Pressure to behave
11
Performance of behavior is more consistent than inconsistent with their self image Emotional reaction more positive than negative Other people think the person is able to perform the behavior
