Introduction to Engineering and Technology Concepts Unit Seven Chapter Two – Machine Tool Safety

Instructions for Success: Each chapter of every unit will begin with a “Mindjog.” This is a warm up question that you should answer in your workbook in the proper chapter. Please take notes as you move through the presentations in the notebook that has been provided. Sections will come up in each presentation with an assignment notice. Turn to the section detailed on the slide in your workbook and complete the assignment before proceeding. Good luck!

Objective Students will define safety regulations for the technology education laboratory.

Mindjog! On your worksheet, please respond to the following question: “After analyzing some common machine tools in the last chapter and their overall purpose, do you feel that safety has an important place when working with these tools? Why or why not?”

Safety In the last chapter, we discussed several machine tools that can cut, grind, and puncture. Safety is one of the major considerations when using these tools. This unit will consider safety precautions and consequences when approaching and operating the machines in the Technology Education Department’s lab. Before moving ahead, be sure that you have your syllabus and safety forms signed, as you will be going into the lab shortly.

General Safety Rules General Safety Rules Safety is an integral part of the technology laboratory setting. Understanding and following the appropriate safety procedures will aid in the learning opportunities presented to you. Proceed to the next slide to overview the list.

General Safety Rules 1 1.I will use only the tools, machines and materials which I have been instructed to use by my teacher. 2.I will not wear loose clothing in the lab, and I will roll up my sleeves and wear a shop apron. 3.I will always wear assigned safety goggles in the lab area. 4.I must not cut toward any part of my body, or toward any other person.

General Safety Rules 2 5.I must behave properly and be self- controlled in the Technology laboratory at all times. 6.I must not run, jump, push or fight at any time in the technology laboratory. 7.I must report all accidents, however slight, to the teacher at once. 8.I will work at my assigned place at all times.

General Safety Rules 3 9.I will place my completed or partially completed project in the proper storage area. 10.I will report all damaged or dull tools to the teacher at once. 11.I will never, at any time, throw anything in the lab. 12.I will return tools and materials to their proper places as soon as I have finished with them.

General Safety Rules 4 13.I will always work machines in the lab by myself and make certain that other students are clear of the machines. 14.I will never lean on or touch a machine, even if it’s not in use at the time. 15.I will always leave the lab area cleaner then I found the lab. 16.NOTE: ANY FIGHTING WILL RESULT IN EXPULSION DUE TO TOOLS IN LAB AREA. ANY TOOL WILL BE CONSIDERED A WEAPON!

General Safety Rules 5 I have read and I understand the above 16 safety rules. These will be reviewed and explained a final time in the Technology Education Laboratory by the instructor, and I will do my best to carry them out at all times. I understand that my failure to do so might result in injury to myself and/or others in the Technology laboratory. I also understand that any intentional actions that cause injury to myself or to others will result in the appropriate disciplinary action, as outlined by the school disciplinary policy. By moving into the Technology Education Laboratory, I agree to follow the aforementioned rules and pledge myself to safety (Rule Courtesy of Patapsco High School).

Machines in the Lab The machines found in the Technology Education Laboratory include (but are not limited to) the drill press, band saw, sander (wood planer), hot glue guns, screwdrivers, hammers, scissors, and handsaws.

Assignment #1 Please turn to the section in your workbook entitled, “Unit Seven, Chapter Two – Machine Tool Safety.” Complete the extension questions under the “Assignment #1” header before moving onto the next section of slides.

BEFORE MOVING ON: Did you complete the “Assignment #1” Section under the “Unit Seven, Chapter Two – Machine Tool Safety” section of your workbook? If you have, please proceed to the next slide.

Your Assignment and Safety All of these Chapters you have been working on are leading up to an assignment where you will be moved into the Technology Education Lab to produce an artifact. The two tools that you will be using to produce the final assignment are a hot glue gun and scissors. The remainder of this chapter will be dedicated to safety specific to the final assignment.

The Hot Glue Gun The glue gun is a VERY hot device that can burn your skin VERY easily. Remember that the safety rules state that if you get burnt or injured at all, you must present the injury to your instructor. When stepping into the lab area, you MUST ALWAYS wear your safety goggles! Failure to do this will see you excused from the lab with your participation and overall grade marked down.

The Hot Glue Gun (continued) The hot glue gun is a tool that heats up solidified glue and dispenses it onto a project. It has six main parts: 1.Glue stick receiver 2.The body/handle 3.The heating element 4.Nozzle 5.Trigger 6.Stand

The Hot Glue Gun (continued) Specifically, those six parts are labeled in this diagram:

Scissors A pair of scissors is made of a first class lever with the second application of an inclined plane, a wedge (Wright, 2004). Recall that a wedge is a device used to split and separate materials and to grip parts (Wright, 2004).

Unit Seven Completed! Please close this presentation and launch the file entitled, “Unit Eight, Chapter One.”
