M: Militarism A: Alliances N: Nationalism I: Imperialism A: Assassination

Uh-oh… It is a beautiful Saturday morning. You wake up to sunlight filling your room and are greeted by the pleasant melody of birds chirping in a nearby tree. Just as you stretch and begin to head downstairs for a nice breakfast of two eggs, sunny-side up with a side of wheat toast and hash browns an awful rumble shakes your entire house. Picture frames rattle, dishes shake and fear washes over you. What could this be?! An earthquake?! In Wheaton, Illinois, this is doubtful, so you run to the window just as your neighbor, Bob, sits revving the engine of a 55 ton tank. Yes, a tank. Complete with camouflage and some sort of missile launcher that is currently aimed…at YOU! What is your first reaction? How do you respond? Describe what you would do, and why?

MILITARISM Based on the belief that European powers must be backed by a strong military Create large standing armies Design military to organize and mobilize in a moment’s notice The policy of glorifying military power and keeping the army prepared for war

“The entire able-bodied population are preparing to massacre one another; though no one, it is true, wants to attack…yet the whole world feels that it only requires some unforeseen incident, some unpreventable accident, for the spark to fall in a flash…and blow all Europe sky- high.” -Frédéric Passy

ALLIANCES “A formal agreement establishing an association of nations or other groups formed to advance common interests or causes”

ALLIANCES: The Triple Entente Great Britain Russia France

ALLIANCES: The Triple Alliance Italy Austria-Hungary Germany

ALLIANCES: At Work

NATIONALISM Extreme pride in one’s nation Acts as a unifying force within a country or ethnic group Forms the foundation of the rivalry between European nations Urges ethnic groups to seek independence

IMPERIALISM “The policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries”

NEWS BULLETIN DATELINE: CRISIS IN BAHKAN The government of Bahkan has reported that Penland nationalists have staged a massive armed attack along her borders. They have taken control of the East River and have bombed government facilities in the capital. It is believed that the invaders are members of the same group that has staged similar attacks along the Bahkan border in previous months. This action is, by far, the most serious action taken by Penlandian nationalists. Bahkanian officials charge that this attack was led by the regular Penlandian army, and is an outright act of aggression against their territorial integrity. Government representatives in Penland have refused to comment on the current crisis. This leads to speculation that Bahkanese officials are making a legitimate charge. Additional reports indicate there have been massive troop movements in Penland in the direction of both Sandia and Yorkton.

STATE DEBRIEFING As a nation, consider the following questions:As a nation, consider the following questions: 1.How did the nations align themselves? 2.What role did “self-interest” play in reaching a solution to this conflict? 3.Was war the only realistic solution to this scenario?
